Graycor Job Sites Honor Safety Week and National Safety Stand-Down

To promote and celebrate safety in conjunction with Safety Week 2016 and OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down—both held May 2-6—several Graycor project sites are reinforcing safety this week in many ways:

Phillips 66 C5/C6 Processing Unit Project
Wood River Refinery, Wood River, Illinois

Throughout the week, Graycor Industrial’s project team at Phillips 66 has held safety stand-downs (voluntary events for employers to talk directly to employees about safety) on fall hazard awareness, ladder use, scaffolding, work at elevated locations and falling object prevention.

Stephen Brown, senior project manager for Graycor Industrial, says the meetings have had everyone’s attention and participation, including craft and supervisors. He feels the safety topics strike a chord, adding, “Unfortunately, all are aware of someone injured in a fall, whether at work or at home.”

Graycor Safety Representative David Henning and Safety Manager Frank Deller respectively presented earlier this week on the topics of ladders and scaffolding—equipment integral to the construction process on industrial projects.

On Friday, Stephen will give a safety talk on falling object prevention.

BP Central Maintenance and Capital Projects
Whiting Refinery, Whiting, Indiana

Celebrating its hard-earned safety achievements, Graycor Industrial’s project team at BP kicked off Safety Week with a meeting and luncheon held on Tuesday at the Whiting Refinery project site. Approximately 75 attended, including Graycor’s project leadership and craft team, alongside BP project representatives.

Graycor’s team, led by Gregg Kobe, senior project manager, is proud to have achieved zero OSHA recordable injuries, as well as successfully participated in a recent safety audit conducted by BP.

The safety meeting also included a segment devoted to National Safety Stand Down, also being observed at the site this week.

Jim Janesek, safety supervisor for Graycor, led a demonstration and discussion on several fall protection topics including informing the group on proper types of harnessing, how to calculate fall heights and when to enable retraction. Alex Robertson, Jr., pipefitter apprentice, and Brett Brinkley, ironworker apprentice, (pictured above) each assisted in the demonstrations.

The group also learned more about Graycor’s dropped tool program and were able to view several types of tethering tools on display for the event.

AK Steel 2016 Maintenance Project
Middletown Works, Middletown, Ohio

On Friday, Graycor Industrial’s project team at AK Steel’s Middletown site will host a cookout for more than 70 workers currently completing maintenance projects there.

When it comes to safety, Project Manager Brad Flohre says, “This is a great opportunity for our team to be part of something bigger.” The luncheon will be held at Graycor’s safety trailer on site.
